Oregon Symphony

Guest Artist Bio

Storm Large

Singer Storm Large, by now a favorite of Portland audiences, has been away so much in the past year she is ecstatic to be home. And after her debut with the Oregon Symphony at a special Valentine’s concert last season, followed by a reprise performance at the orchestra’s “Countdown to Carnegie” benefit concert to start this season, she is especially thrilled (and a bit surprised) to be invited to sing with the Oregon Symphony yet again.

In fall 2010 Large performed in the world premiere of the Randy Newman musical revue Harps and Angels at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. Before that, Large spent a great deal of time in New York City over the past year, working on her one-woman show Crazy Enough with director Sam Gold, getting a one-hour version ready for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. Then, after 24 shows in 26 days overseas, she came home beat up and bedraggled, with one hickey and a generous helping of stars from the press in the United Kingdom.

Large actually has been singing and slinging inappropriate banter at audiences around the globe for more than 15 years. In 2002 she moved to Portland and quickly, with her band The Balls, went from wild club act to legendary cult status. In 2006 she was tapped to appear on CBS’ reality show Rockstar: Supernova – a three-month TV that gained her worldwide fame –  and in late 2006 her single “Ladylike” debuted at No. 5 on the hot singles chart in Billboard magazine. For the next two years she and The Balls hit the road, touring throughout the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Iceland and Singapore.

In 2007, tired of touring and missing Portland, Large accepted the role of Sally Bowles in Portland Center Stage's production of Cabaret. The production turned out to be a huge hit, and Large fell in love with the theater.

In her free time she is finishing up her first book, scheduled for publication by Simon & Schuster in June 2012. More information online: stormlarge.com
