Founded in 1945 by C. Robert Zimmerman, the Portland Symphonic Choir is a strong presence in Portland’s cultural and artistic communities.
Dr. Steven Zopfi, its artistic director and conductor, is a passionate advocate of new music and has commissioned and conducted several world premieres in his three-year tenure with the choir. Under his leadership it has transformed from an all-volunteer ensemble to a semi-professional choir, one of the few on the West Coast. The choir has commissioned pieces from local and internationally known composers, performed with Dave Brubeck and his jazz quartet, appeared with the Boston Pops and teamed with the Oregon Ballet Theatre to present Carmina Burana.
The Portland Symphonic Choir presents its own concert series in addition to regular performances with the Oregon Symphony, through which the choir reaches upwards of 15,000 music lovers each year. The choir also collaborates with other local music groups. At its next concert – That's Entertainment, May 22 and 23 at the Scottish Rite Hall – the singers will present favorite tunes from the movies.
