First season with the Oregon Symphony:

1993-1994

Most influential teacher(s):

Raphael Spiro was a wonderful mentor and teacher during my early years — ages 9 through 16.

Earliest musical memory:

Performing as part of a von Trapp family-like ensemble with my parents and two sisters. We sang and played instruments in churches, prisons, nursing homes and schools. I joined the troupe at age 2.

"I first knew I would make music my career when ... "

At age 15, I had to make a choice between playing violin or playing on the basketball team.

"Other than performing music, I've always thought it might be fun to be a ... "

Basketball player or one of the Andrews Sisters.

Favorite composer and/or period?

Richard Strauss, because he really knows how to use an orchestra. Schubert's symphonies are also very beautiful with clear texture and harmony.

What do you enjoy most about performing?

When performing with the Symphony, the feeling of sharing something beautiful with everyone — orchestra and audience — and being part of something bigger than myself. When my sister Janet and I perform, I enjoy the more direct interaction with the audience.

Other than playing great music, what do you see as the Symphony's most important role?

To work toward the highest artistic ideas and to become a model of those ideals. Also, to pass the "cultural torch" on from one generation to the next.

What is your favorite part of being a member of the Oregon Symphony?

Having the love of music in common and the sense of belonging — almost a "family" feeling.
