First season with the Oregon Symphony:
1962-1963
Most influential teacher(s):
I have had many influential teachers. My longtime friendship with Warren Baker is the most influential — rich with memories and stories to tell. There is plenty to talk about when we get together.
Earliest musical memory:
Playing piano on my father’s knee when I was 4 years old. My father played piano and my mother like to sing. “Whispering Hope” was one of her favorite songs.
"I first knew I would make music my career when ... "
I was actually doing it. My first professional job was at age 15 with my first teachers, George Reinmiller and John Trudeau.
"Other than performing music, I've always thought it might be fun to be a ... "
Winner in the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes. I would also like to be a concert pianist and a successful options trader.
Favorite composer and/or period?
I love the beautiful melodies and harmonies of Rachmaninoff and Mahler. I find myself conducting the music in front of my mirror at home.
What does this photograph say about your life?
I am proud to make batons for many prominent conductors. I have made over 300 batons for Maestro DePreist. The batons also resemble chopsticks which also remind me of having dinner with my children Erin and Zachary at our favorite Japanese restaurant.
What do you enjoy most about performing?
I like to see visible signs that people enjoyed the concert. I also enjoy the appreciation that goes along with a stirring performance.
Other than playing great music, what do you see as the Symphony's most important role?
To educate and provide opportunities for young talent to be fully expressed.
What is your favorite part of being a member of the Oregon Symphony?
Being connected to great music and supremely talented people. Striving for excellence and being proud along the way.
