First season with the Oregon Symphony:

1992-1993

Most influential teacher(s):

Al Laszlo, at the University of Cincinnati. Not only is he a great teacher, but it is with him that I studied the longest (about 5 years). I have studied with many phenomenal bass players, including Stuart Sankey, Paul Ellison, Bruce Bransby and Eugene Levinson, but I studied with them only for short periods of time. I would not be the player I am today if it were not for each and every one of these influential teachers, but I feel I have gotten the most from my time spent, and the relationship that was formed, with Mr. Laszlo.

Earliest musical memory:

My father at the piano playing his favorite jazz tunes and his favorite classical pieces, including Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C Sharp Minor.

"I first knew I would make music my career when ... "

When my father told me: "If you want to study music, you'll make it." At that time, I was torn between the decision to study music or engineering at college. A career in music was my desire but I was daunted by the difficulty of "making it."

"Other than performing music, I've always thought it might be fun to be a ... "

Professional soccer player.

Favorite composer and/or period?

J.S. Bach, because of his musical genius which inspires me and lifts my soul and his view on the ultimate goal of his music — to give glory to God.

What does this photograph say about your life?

I love my family, and my family and I love music. Noah likes to assist me when I practice.

What do you enjoy most about performing?

The time when everything "clicks" and all the musicians have the same heart and mind to express the spirit of the music, and the satisfaction that comes when the audience is uplifted by that experience.

Other than playing great music, what do you see as the Symphony's most important role?

To support music in the schools and educate our children about the importance of music in our lives.

What is your favorite part of being a member of the Oregon Symphony?

Living in Portland among terrific people.
