Viola

First season with the Oregon Symphony:

1984-1985

Most influential teacher(s):

During college I studied viola with Darrel Barnes, who was principal violist of the St. Louis Symphony at that time. He taught me that playing the viola is very, very different from playing the violin!

Earliest musical memory:

Singing before bedtime with my dad. Hearing my mom play the piano. The first concert I remember attending was a recital given in a gymnasium by Leontyne Price. I sat in the bleachers with my crayons and coloring book. I was in awe of her dress — it was long and white with enormous orange flowers on it.

"I first knew I would make music my career when ... "

Actually, I’m not sure I actively made that decision! It just happened because I couldn’t bear the alternative (not playing)!

"Other than performing music, I've always thought it might be fun to be a ... "

Computer programmer, librarian, stock broker, theologian or interior house painter.

Favorite composer and/or period?

J.S. Bach — I love the order and purity of his music. As a violist, I have to add Hindemith, and as an orchestra musician, Bruckner, Brahms and Mahler.

What does this photograph say about your life?

My family is my most important priority, and since my two children are past the adorable baby stage, our dog, Rose, was chosen to represent the family. Also, I never do anything just halfway — I get totally involved in my interests and projects and Rose is a great (Dane) symbol of that trait!

What do you enjoy most about performing?

While playing great music, I get a clearer idea of mankind’s innate nobility. That has great value to me.

Other than playing great music, what do you see as the Symphony's most important role?

Preserving and promoting some of the greatest art produced by Western civilization. The works we perform are major achievements of our culture, and it is our privilege and responsibility to share them with all who will listen.

What is your favorite part of being a member of the Oregon Symphony?

I love the active expression of intuition and perception that is required to play in accord with a conductor and 85 other musicians. It is fun!
