ROMANTIC MUSIC FOR CELLO AND PIANO TO BE FEATURED IN CHAMBER MUSIC ON TAP CONCERT

________________________________________________________________________

Portland, Ore. … Timothy Scott, Oregon Symphony cellist, and pianist Susan Smith will present an old-fashioned recital of romantic music for cello and piano as part of the popular Chamber Music on Tap series Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at BridgePort BrewPub (1313 N.W. Marshall St., Portland). Chamber Music on Tap, sponsored by BridgePort Brewing Company, is presented by Fortissimo, an Oregon Symphony volunteer organization.

"This is a program for people who love the romantic sound of the cello," Scott said. "The concert will feature beloved sonatas for cello and piano by Brahms and Mendelssohn as well as several shorter works by Rachmaninoff, Ravel, David Popper and Nadia Boulanger. Susan Smith will perform Ravel's brilliant showpiece "Ondine" from "Gaspard de La Nuit," and the concert will conclude with a suite of popular folk songs by the great French cellist Paul Bazelaire."

The program will include Mendelssohn's Sonata No. 1 and "Song Without Words," Rachmaninoff's "Danse Oriental," Glazunov's "Sérénade Espagnole," Ravel's "Ondine" from "Gaspard de La Nuit," David Popper's Harlequin Op. 3, No. 1, Brahms' Sonata No. 1, Nadia Boulanger's "Moderato" from "Trois Pièces" and Paul Bazelaire's "Suite Française."

Chamber Music on Tap is an innovative series of casual chamber music concerts featuring performances by members of the Oregon Symphony and local musicians of note. Highly acclaimed performances and an informal setting at a local brewery have made Chamber Music on Tap one of the most popular chamber music series in Portland. The concerts provide audience members the opportunity to interact with musicians and socialize while sampling BridgePort's homemade pizza and handcrafted ales in the pub's unique building, a 100-year-old former rope factory.

The concerts are held upstairs in BridgePort BrewPub's Heritage Room the second Wednesday of November and every third Wednesday of January through May.

Fortissimo is an Oregon Symphony volunteer organization that offers educational resources, member benefits and networking opportunities. Fortissimo volunteer activities support the Oregon Symphony's efforts to reach new and younger audiences.

Tickets are $6 for Fortissimo members, $10 for the general public and may be purchased in advance at the Oregon Symphony Ticket Office (923 S.W. Washington), Monday - Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or charged by phone at 503-228-1353 or (800) 228-7343. Tickets also may be purchased at the door, if available. All proceeds from the evening benefit the Oregon Symphony.

Timothy Scott

Timothy Scott was born in Brooklyn in 1950. While in New York he attended The Juilliard School of Music and Sarah Lawrence College, studying with Maurice Eisenberg. In the early 1980s, Scott continued his cello studies with Eva Heinitz in Seattle.

Scott toured the United States as cellist with Harry Chapin for two years before moving to Portland to become a member of the Oregon Symphony. During the 20 years he has lived in Portland, Scott has been very active as a member of many chamber music ensembles, summer festivals, and as soloist with the Oregon Symphony, the Columbia Symphony, and the Marylhurst Symphony.

In addition to his activities as a cellist, Scott plays viola da gamba and is often heard in chamber music concerts as soloist in the Bach Passions. He began studying the viola da gamba in approximately 1980 and has devoted considerable time to learning this instrument as well as to studying the performance practices of the 17th and 18th centuries. The bass viola da gamba is the solo instrument of the viol family, and Scott enjoys exploring and performing the rich literature for the instrument including works by composers such as Marais, Forqueray, Simpson, Ortiz and others. His own viola da gamba was made in 1986 by Portland luthier Jesse Wells.

Susan Smith

Pianist Susan DeWitt Smith maintains an active performing schedule in Portland and teaches at Lewis and Clark College. She has appeared as a soloist with the Dartmouth Symphony, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Palomar Symphony, San Diego Symphony and the Oregon Symphony and performed through out the United States and New Zealand.

An avid chamber musician, Smith has played at the Hot Springs Festival, the Grand Teton Music Festival, the Nelson Music Festival and the Olympic Music Festival. Her professional recordings include several works for Radio New Zealand and a CD of music by New Zealand composers (Manu). KOCH International Classics recordings include one with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra and two with flutist Alexa Still.

Smith earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College and her Master of Music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music. Her many musical accolades include a second prize in the Young Keyboard Artists' International Competition, several performance awards from Dartmouth College and the performer's certificate and teaching award from Eastman.
