"MEET THE ORCHESTRA" KINDERKONZERT SCHEDULED FOR PARKROSE AREA STUDENTS
____________________________________________________________________________________

Portland, Ore. … Continuing the relationship in Northeast Portland's Parkrose neighborhood that began with an Oregon Symphony in the Neighborhoods concert at Knott Park in August, the Oregon Symphony will present a KinderKonzert for K-3rd-graders Thursday, Oct. 25, at 10 and 11:30 a.m. at St. Therese School (1260 NE 132nd Ave.). KinderKonzerts began as part of an effort by the Oregon Symphony Education and Community Programs Department to create age-specific learning opportunities.

The concert, titled "Meet the Orchestra," will introduce kids from St. Therese School, Shaver Elementary, Prescott Elementary, and Sacramento Elementary to the instruments of the orchestra in a 40-minute concert narrated by Diane Syrcle, the education director at the Portland Opera. Syrcle will sing melodies with the children to identify the sounds of the orchestra. "Meet the Orchestra" will use excerpts from works of composers including Copland, Beethoven, Mozart and Tchaikovsky. The program will feature the "Hoedown" from Copland's "Rodeo," Bizet's "Aragonaise" from "Carmen," the first movement of Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" and many others.

KinderKonzerts debuted last season and sprang from the Symphony's Education Strategic plan, which was adopted by the Oregon Symphony in May 2000. The Education Strategic Plan focuses on providing age-specific and needs-based programming to students in Portland and throughout the state of Oregon. "Meet the Orchestra" is a continuation of the Education and Community Programs' presence in the Parkrose Neighborhood, home to Knott Park, which was one of last summer's Oregon Symphony in the Neighborhoods concert locations.

KinderKonzerts are free but open by invitation only. For more information, contact the Oregon Symphony Education and Community Programs Department at 503-228-4294 or visit the Symphony's Web site at www.orsymphony.org.
