FREE OUTDOOR CONCERTS SCHEDULED AT PORTLAND AREA PARKS AS
PART OF
ANNUAL 'OREGON SYMPHONY IN THE NEIGHBORHOODS' PROJECT
PRESENTED BY THE CITY AND THE REGIONAL ARTS AND CULTURE COUNCIL
____________________________________________________________________________________
Portland, Ore. ... Portland's Pier and Glenhaven Parks will be the summer setting for two Oregon Symphony concerts during the seventh annual "Oregon Symphony in the Neighborhoods," a city-funded neighborhood revitalization project established in collaboration with the city of Portland and the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC) to bring music "to the people." Music Director James DePreist will conduct the traditional Tom McCall Waterfront Park performance in a public celebration of music culminating the events.
The events will begin with festivities which incorporate neighborhood arts groups with Symphony performances Sunday, Aug. 18, at Pier Park (at the juncture of N. James St. and N. Bruce Ave) and Sunday, Aug. 25, at Glenhaven Park (at N.E. 82nd Ave. and N.E. Siskiyou St). Afternoon festivities for both parks will begin at 3 p.m., and concerts will start at 7 p.m. DePreist will conduct a selection of classics, capped by the 1812 Overture at Tom McCall Waterfront Park on Thursday, Aug. 29. Detailed program information and a schedule of afternoon events for Pier and Glenhaven Parks will be announced in July. All events are free.
This marks the seventh year that the Oregon Symphony has collaborated with the City of Portland and the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC) in taking great music "to the people" in a series of parks concerts, festivals and year-long educational outreach activities. "Oregon Symphony in the Neighborhoods" is modeled after the Symphony's nationally recognized regional touring program and is envisioned as a permanent, on-going project. It draws on the great power of music and other significant Oregon Symphony resources to serve and strengthen targeted neighborhoods throughout the Portland area.
