TWO
FULL DAYS OF EDUCATION EVENTS PLANNED FOR
SYMPHONY'S 2002 MEYER MEMORIAL TRUST/NEA REGIONAL TOUR
____________________________________________________________________________________
Portland, Ore. Four concerts and more than 50 education events are scheduled in 13 communities throughout Eastern Oregon and Idaho as the Symphony presents its 10th annual Meyer Memorial Trust/NEA Regional Tour April 10 through 13. Guest Conductor Giancarlo Guerrero will conduct a program including Dvorák, Vaughan Williams, Rachmaninoff, Copland and more in Hermiston on Thursday, April 11, LaGrande April 12, Caldwell, Idaho, April 13 and a Youth Concert April 12 in Hermiston. Tickets may be obtained by calling 541-567-6151 (Hermiston), 541-693-5242 (LaGrande) and 208-454-1376 (Caldwell). The tour is sponsored by US Bank and the PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning. Educational activities on the tour are supported by the Lamb Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust, National Endowment for the Arts, Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Community Foundation, Hermiston Generating Plant and the Patty Vemer Education Fund.
Symphony musicians will visit schools in LaGrande, Caldwell, Hermiston and the surrounding communities of Pendleton, Umatilla, Irrigon, Boardman, Stanfield, Echo, Union, Wilder, Enterprise and Baker City all day on both April 10 and 11 to lead masterclasses, informances, orchestra and band clinics and petting zoos for students in grades 1-12, university students and community members. Note: See the attached list of education events for more information.
Masterclasses and clinics will give middle and high school students an opportunity work with Symphony musicians in small ensembles, sectionals or as individuals. Musicians and teachers have collaborated in determining the content for these classes. Informances feature informal performances and discussion, offering elementary and middle school students a close-up look at the musicians and their lives and the opportunity to ask questions about whatever musical topics interest them. Instrument petting zoos, popular hands-on learning sessions, will give elementary school students a chance to hold and play instruments with the help of orchestra members.
In addition, a brass ensemble featuring Assistant Principal Trumpet Sally Kuhns, French hornist Barton Parker and trombonist Alan Pierce will perform from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 10 at the Caldwell Senior Center. Symphony President Tony Woodcock will host a Rotary talk from noon to 1 p.m. in Hermiston, and Guerrero will give a pre-concert lecture from 6 to 6:30 p.m. at the Hermiston Community Center April 11. Oboist Karen Wagner, violinist Georgeanne Ries and Symphony Director of Education & Community Programs Michael Kosmala will lead a Rotary talk April 10 from 12:30 to 1:10 p.m. for business and community leaders at the Kaley Center at Caldwell's West Valley Medical Center.
