FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OREGON PUBLIC BROADCASTING, SYMPHONY EXPAND PARTNERSHIP
TO INCREASE STATEWIDE REACH AND SERVICE

Portland, Ore. … Concerts performed by the Oregon Symphony will now be heard in Lakeview, Pendleton, Burns and many other communities in Oregon and Southwest Washington due to an expanded partnership between the Symphony and Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) Radio. The expanded partnership was announced by Jack Galmiche, OPB Chief Operating Officer, at the Oregon Symphony’s annual meeting today at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts.

“The Symphony and OPB share a responsibility to provide quality cultural programming to every citizen throughout our region,” said Galmiche. “We have found ourselves natural partners in that effort, most clearly evidenced by our collaboration on the In Memoriam concert telecast in the wake of 9/11. This is a wonderful opportunity to enhance our service and further build on the strength of our partnership with the Symphony.”

Music Director Carlos Kalmar has said on numerous occasions his goal is to “touch the soul of every Oregonian.” “This is just fantastic news,” he said today. “It takes our concerts into the living rooms of thousands of Oregonians on a regular basis and I am extremely grateful to Jack and everyone at OPB for that.”

“This is an incredibly important step for the Symphony,” said Symphony President William Ryberg. “We are committed to engaging the broadest possible statewide audience with our concerts and education programs, and there is no doubt that this partnership with OPB aids that effort immeasurably. We look forward to exploring other creative means of serving the state together.”

Concert broadcasts will begin in January of 2005 and will air monthly on the first Friday of the month from 9 to 11 p.m., said Galmiche. A total of 10 Oregon Symphony Classical concerts will be recorded for broadcast this season, which includes all of the concerts Kalmar conducts and the October concert to be conducted by Laureate Music Director James DePreist.
