FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Portland, Ore. … Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 7 is featured in the final Oregon Symphony Classical concert of the 2005-06 season led by Music Director Carlos Kalmar on May 20, 21 and 22 at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Media support is provided by The Oregonian. Corporate support for the May 20 pre-concert talk is provided by BOORA Architects. Lufthansa is the exclusive airline sponsor for the Symphony’s Classical series.
These concerts mark the Symphony’s – and Portland -- premiere of Mahler’s Seventh Symphony, which features over an hour of music in five movements and some unusual instruments, including mandolin and guitar. “This music is very dramatic,” says Kalmar. “It reveals some little-known facets of Mahler’s personality.” Also on the program is the Symphony’s premiere of Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in E-flat, “St. Anne,” transcribed for orchestra by Arnold Schoenberg. “This arrangement is very lush and brilliant. It calls for a huge orchestra, including six French horns,” says Kalmar. “It’s not often we have so many players onstage at once, and since the Mahler also requires a large orchestra it makes sense to program these two works together.”
Oregon Symphony Classical concerts regularly include additional opportunities for listeners to learn more about the music and the orchestra. These activities include:
Pre-concert talks: Music Director Carlos Kalmar and KBPS host Shaun Yu will lead a discussion one hour before the concert of the works to be performed. Media support for “Pre-Concert Talks” is provided by Classical Millennium.
Saturday: Music Director Carlos Kalmar will speak briefly from the podium in “Saturday Interactive.” Media support for “Saturday Interactive” is provided by KINK fm102.
