FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Portland, Ore. … Barnes & Noble Booksellers and the Oregon Symphony present a “Musical Bookfair” featuring live performances and children’s activities on Nov. 12 at the Barnes & Noble store at Jantzen Beach. A percentage of Barnes & Noble’s sales made during the Bookfair will go to the Oregon Symphony. Barnes & Noble is located at 1720 N. Jantzen Beach, Portland.
This free event will showcase the music of the Symphony’s RBC Dain Rauscher Front Row Center Series, which features music inspired by famous works of literature. “By teaming up with Barnes & Noble for this Bookfair, we hope to increase visibility and awareness of Oregon Symphony concerts and education programs, especially the Front Row Center series,” says Jennifer Schlobohm, Director of Corporate Relations. Funds raised from the Bookfair will support the Symphony’s Education and Community Engagement activities, she adds.
Books and CDs featured in the Symphony’s upcoming “Fairy Tales Revisited” concert on Nov. 18, including “Mother Goose” stories and Ravel’s “Mother Goose Suite,” will be available for purchase, as will books and CDs for the Symphony’s other 2005-06 RBC Dain Rauscher Front Row Center concerts, “Women of Substance,” in January, 2006 and “Romeo and Juliet,” in March, 2006.
Bookfair participants will receive an Oregon Symphony Bookfair Voucher, which can be turned in at the cash register; a percentage of sales made during the Bookfair will go to support the Oregon Symphony (not including gift cards, membership cards and café consumables). “With this event, you can start your holiday shopping early and support one of Oregon’s finest cultural institutions at the same time,” says Schlobohm.
Activities begin at 12 p.m. with an instrumental “petting zoo,” a hands-on event for children of all ages to learn about the different instruments of the orchestra. Symphony musicians will demonstrate how their instruments “work” and give children a chance to try them out.
At 2 p.m., Symphony violinist Gregory Ewer and other members of the Symphony’s string sections will present an “informance,” a casual combination of information session and performance. Attendees will learn about the musicians’ careers, the instruments they play and enjoy some light chamber music.
The Bookfair is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12 from 12 . to 4 p.m. The Symphony’s “petting zoo” will take place at 12 p.m. and the string quartet “informance” at 2 p.m. For more information call 503-228-4294 or call Kendra Lay at Barnes and Noble at (503) 240-5578.
