FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Portland, Ore. … The musical, dramatic and visual elements of Mother Goose stories and other folk tales are explored in the opening RBC Dain Rauscher Front Row Center concert presented by Music Director Carlos Kalmar and the Oregon Symphony featuring excerpts from Ravel’s “Mother Goose Suite” on Friday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Further support is provided by American Airlines.
In “Fairy Tales Revisited,” the first concert of the 2005-2006 RBC Dain Rauscher Front Row Center series, Kalmar considers the literary underpinnings of Stravinsky’s “Firebird” Suite, Ravel’s “Mother Goose” Suite, Dvořák’s symphonic poem, “The Wood Dove” and Anatoly Liadov’s musical retelling of the Russian folk tale “Baba Yaga.” Kalmar will discuss the literary and musical origins of these works, summarize their plotlines, present illustrations of characters from the different stories and explain how the music was created. In addition, Kalmar may have a surprise in store for the audience. “I like very much the idea of making a connection between music and literature,” Kalmar explains.
The RBC Dain Rauscher Front Row Center series is designed to introduce new audiences to symphonic music, utilizing dramatic and visual elements to make the story and the music come alive. Each of this season’s concerts focuses on the intersection of music and literature. The next concert, in January 2006, will feature musical representations of famous literary female characters, including Carmen and Scheherazade; the final concert, in March 2006, will take a closer look at several musical interpretations of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.”
