FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Portland, Ore. … The Oregon Symphony Association announced today the appointment of Vice-President and General Manager Mary Crist as interim president and Elaine Calder as strategic planning consultant, effective November 15.
Crist will succeed Life Director Gerald Hulsman. Mr. Hulsman will continue to work with the OSA staff and board as a key member of the fundraising team.
Board Chair Walter Weyler said, “Jerry has done an outstanding job in his volunteer role as Interim President, and the Oregon Symphony is indebted to him for his leadership and dedication. He will continue to play an important part in our fund development activities.”
Crist joined the OSA in 1999 as vice president and general manager after serving in similar capacities with the Kansas City Symphony, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and San Antonio Symphony. She has 18 years of experience in senior arts administration and 15 years as a professional musician.
“We’re delighted that Mary has agreed to assume senior responsibility as interim president. Her thoughtful and consistent ability to work at the core of issues and her commitment to the well-being of staff and musicians characterize her tenure in Oregon,” said Weyler.
Calder is a Canadian with 25 years of experience as a senior performing arts executive. She has led several major Canadian companies including the National Arts Centre (Ottawa), the Edmonton Symphony and the internationally-renowned Shaw Festival and Canadian Opera Company.
“With these changes, the Board feels that we have a very strong administrative team to complement and support the outstanding work of Music Director Carlos Kalmar and our superb orchestra, said Weyler.”
