FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ALL CLASSICAL FM TO PREMIERE NEW SHOW, 'THE CONDUCTOR,'
HOSTED BY MUSIC DIRECTOR CARLOS KALMAR
(PORTLAND, Ore.) –Oregon Symphony Music Director Carlos Kalmar will take an in-depth look at the best – and best-known – conductors of the past century and explore exactly what makes a conductor great in a new monthly radio program, “The Conductor,” to be broadcast the first Sunday of each month, starting Nov. 2, on the stations of All Classical FM, the non-profit 24-hour classical music station serving Oregon and Southwest Washington.
Kalmar has conducted orchestras in various historic capitals of classical music and served as music director of the Hamburg Symphony, Stuttgart Philharmonic and Vienna’s Tonkunstlerorchester. He has been the Oregon Symphony’s music director since 2003, serves as Principal Conductor of the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago and is active as a guest conductor of orchestras around the world.
Kalmar, who began studying at the Vienna Academy of Music at age 15, will draw from his life’s work to examine and discuss both the art and science of conducting a modern symphony orchestra.
“We are trying not only to portray these great musicians but also to look at them from the point of view of an insider,” Kalmar said. “What makes these conductors great? How did they get results?”
After an initial episode that explores the birth of the “star conductor” late in the 19th century, each succeeding show will focus on one individual conductor among the pantheon of 20th-century greats, mixing anecdotes with historical stories and comments.
“The Conductor” will be broadcast at 5 p.m. on the first Sunday of every month on the stations of All Classical FM. It can also be heard online on the web site allclassical.org.
"Carlos Kalmar’s career speaks for itself. This is a rare opportunity for us to tap into the mind and perspective of such an accomplished and engaging conductor,” said Jack Allen, All Classical FM’s president and CEO. “Carlos and the Oregon Symphony are essential players in the region’s artistic community and, for us, providing this forum is exciting and only appropriate.”
