OREGON SYMPHONY RENEWS CARLOS KALMAR'S CONTRACT
(PORTLAND, Ore.) – Oregon Symphony Board Chair Terrence R. Pancoast today announced the renewal of Music Director Carlos Kalmar’s contract, through June 2015.
“Carlos’s accomplishments with the orchestra since being named Music Director in 2003 are extraordinary,” he said. “He has taken the Oregon Symphony to a new level of performance, as he demonstrated so clearly at Carnegie Hall. It gives us great confidence that our artistic trajectory will continue upward, knowing that Carlos will be at the musical helm through June, 2015.”
Kalmar’s current contract, set to expire in 2013, was renewed in recognition of his significant accomplishments and in order to insure his continued and uninterrupted artistic leadership.
The orchestra’s triumphant performance at New York’s Carnegie Hall in the May Spring for Music festival was hailed as “the highlight of the festival and one of the most gripping events of the current season” by the New Yorker magazine’s Alex Ross. The concert can still be heard online by listeners around the world.
The Carnegie Hall program devised by Kalmar and entitled “Music for a Time of War” was recorded live during two performances in Portland prior to the New York trip, and will be released later this year on the PentaTone label. It will be the Oregon Symphony’s first recording with Kalmar, and the organization has committed to three more recordings over the next four seasons.
Music Director Carlos Kalmar was clearly delighted with the contract renewal. Reacting to the news, he commented: “The past eight years with the Oregon Symphony have been extremely rewarding. I’m looking forward to working with these talented musicians for another four years, playing great music for our patrons--newcomers and long-time supporters as well.”
The Symphony and Kalmar are also scheduled to return to Carnegie Hall in May 2013, to perform in the third annual Spring for Music festival. That program is currently under wraps, and will be announced some time in 2012.
Pancoast added that “with Carlos’s new contract in place we are looking forward to getting a new symphony season underway with a bang at the Waterfront Concert on September 1.”
Kalmar, who maintains homes in Portland and Vienna, is in great demand on podiums around the world. He is also Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Grant Park (Chicago) Music Festival, a position he has held for eleven years and to which he is committed through the summer of 2016. This September he takes up new responsibilities as Music Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de RTVE (Spanish Radio/Television Orchestra) in Madrid. His contract there runs for five years to June 2016.
