FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DAWN UPSHAW CONCERT CANCELLED
COMMUNITY CLASSICAL CELEBRATION SET TO REPLACE IT

(PORTLAND, Ore.) – Oregon Symphony President Elaine Calder today announced that Dawn Upshaw has been forced to withdraw from the Symphony performance on October 1.  There is no further information at this time.

Ms Calder said, “We deeply regret this cancellation and know that our audience joins us in hoping we will be able to welcome Ms. Upshaw to Portland and the Oregon Symphony at the earliest date. Since we have the orchestra and Music Director Carlos Kalmar scheduled for this concert, it gives us a unique opportunity to present a very special concert for our community. Still glowing from their acclaimed performance at Carnegie Hall last May, the orchestra has never sounded better.  We will present a Community Classical Celebration, “From Beethoven to Gershwin” with very affordable ticket pricing and with a program designed for everyone.”

Tickets for this Community Classical Celebration will be $15, $20, and $25 with a $40 Family Pack option.  Tickets are on sale at OrSymphony.org and the Oregon Symphony ticket office beginning Wednesday, September 14 at 10am.

This special concert, with Music Director Carlos Kalmar on the podium, includes Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess: A Symphonic Picture; Copland’s Corral Nocturne from Rodeo; Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture; and other light classical selections by Walton, Franck, Debussy, Chabrier and Barber.  The concert will last approximately two hours, with an intermission.

Patrons who have purchased tickets to the Dawn Upshaw concert have a number of options.  They may exchange their tickets for the Community Classical Celebration or for a selection of concerts occurring over the next three months; they may apply the cost of their tickets toward any other concert during the 2011/12 season; they may make a tax deductible donation to the Oregon Symphony in the amount of their purchase; or they may request a refund.  The Symphony will be calling ticket holders as quickly as possible to inform them of the concert cancellation and to discuss these options.  Patrons are also welcome to call the Symphony Ticket Office at 503-228-1353.
