(PORTLAND, Ore.) – President and CEO Scott Showalter announced today that the Oregon Symphony has made two senior hires: Steve Wenig as Vice President and General Manager, and Ellen Bussing as Vice President for Development.

Wenig and Bussing will be charged with helping to build the programs and capacity of the Oregon Symphony, following the most successful year in its history. In 2014-15, the Oregon Symphony set records for the number of sold-out performances, total ticket revenue, numbers of new patrons and total patrons, total donations, numbers of new donors and total donors, and gala giving. Strategic plans call for growth in artistic and community programs to serve more of the citizens of Portland and Southwest Washington, Showalter noted.

As Vice President and General Manager, Wenig will oversee artistic operations, broadcasts and recordings, orchestra personnel, and education and outreach programs. He replaces Mary Crist, who is retiring from the Symphony after 16 years.

Wenig, who will join the Symphony on November 16, hails from the Houston Symphony, where he has served as Orchestra Personnel Manager and Director of Community Partnerships. He holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Hartford and Master of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Michigan.

As Vice President for Development, Bussing will oversee all fundraising from individuals, foundations, corporations, events, and planned giving programs. Annual fund contributions and distributions from endowment gifts account for approximately half of the Symphony’s $16.7 million budget.

Bussing, who holds a Bachelor of Music from St. Mary’s College, comes to the Symphony from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where she has been the Director of Major Gifts. A Portlander, she has held senior development positions at the University of Arizona, the Oregon Health and Science University Foundation, Willamette University, and Portland Opera. She will join the Symphony on December 14.

Wenig and Bussing complete the President’s leadership team, which also includes Janet Plummer (Chief Financial and Operating Officer), Charles Calmer (Vice President of Artistic Administration), and Jim Fullan (Vice President of Communications, Marketing, and Sales).
