The Symphony Connection
Dear Friends,
In February I had the opportunity to play three concerts with a living legend. Itzhak Perlman was in town, and the orchestra played Beethoven with him on solo violin. The warmth and vividness of his musicianship was truly a delight, and the love from the packed houses was palpable. It’s not every day we get to be in the living presence of someone who influenced us so profoundly, and this was a thrill that was shared by the musicians and the audiences.
I was so proud of the orchestra, too. Mr. Perlman seemed to enjoy himself thoroughly, and why not? We were able to respond to his every request in rehearsal, and the performances had depth and spontaneity. Oregon, we did you proud.
What does it take for an orchestra to reach the level where it can “hang” with one of the greatest musicians of our time? Well, of course, there is the extensive training required to develop inborn talent and the lifelong daily practicing each musician has put in, but it takes more than that. You see, we work full time together, rehearsing and performing almost every week with our music director or a guest conductor, which allows us to develop and maintain the skills of a world-class orchestra, and we have the ongoing support of a skilled staff and dedicated volunteers.
And we have you.
We are the orchestra that brings you living legends as well as exciting new talent. We have the privilege of moving you and intriguing you, of taking you on a journey through time, and into the hearts of great composers, and there is no way we could do it without you.
Please consider a subscription to next season’s concerts – the new season has been announced, and the musicians are really excited! Please also consider a gift to the Oregon Symphony before June 30, when the generous challenge grant will end from the Marion L. and James F. Miller Foundation. Remember, every $2 donation to the Oregon Symphony will be matched by $1 from the Miller Foundation!
For me, great music touches that deep place in each of our hearts where we feel most profoundly; it has the ability to connect us to the highest aspirations of the human soul. It means the world to me to be able to share it with you. Thank you for your support.
