Spanish Splendor

Carlos Kalmar, conductor

Carlos Kalmar
  • Haydn: Symphony No. 93, D major
  • Berio: Folk Songs
  • Falla: The Three-Cornered Hat

Haydn, with his genial wisdom, will cheer and relax you. Then you’re ready for Berio’s warm and thoughtful new approach to folksongs. And Falla’s lively Spanish sounds will make your heart dance.

Hanna Lintu, conductor
+Ralph Kirshbaum, cello

Carlos Kalmar
  • Sibelius: Symphony No. 6, D minor

Haydn—who always offers elegant entertainment—is in rare form here. Beethoven just about explodes with good humor and delight.

Vivaldi's Four Seasons

Carlos Kalmar, conductor
+Elina Vähälä, violin

Elina Vahala
  • +Vivaldi: The Four Seasons
  • Elgar: In the South
  • Berlioz: Roman Carnival Overture

Italian sunshine and also rain, wind, and snow! Vivaldi puts every kind of weather in his Seasons. The other works gleam with rich Italian radiance.

Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 2

Gregory Vajda, conductor
+Kirill Gerstein, piano

Kirill Gerstein
  • Adams: Chamber Symphony
  • +Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 2, B-flat major
  • Schumann: Symphony No. 4, D minor

Salem favorite Kirill Gerstein plays Beethoven, music that’s serious and tuneful. Schumann’s music blurs the boundaries of traditional symphonic form. And there’s also fun, with a quirky Adams piece inspired in part by TV cartoons.

Liszt Piano Concerto No. 2

Carlos Kalmar, conductor
+Arnaldo Cohen, piano

Arnaldo Cohen
  • Copland: Fanfare for the Common Man
  • Barber: Souvenirs
  • +Liszt: Piano Concerto No. 2, A major
  • Bizet: Symphony in C
  • Liszt: Les Préludes

All these pieces are music you’ll remember: Liszt for his grandeur, Copland for his nobility and Bizet because he’s so playful. But the Barber work is a special gem, a nostalgic visit to the dance floors of long ago.

Mozart Clarinet Concerto

Gregory Vajda, conductor
+Sharon Kam, clarinet

Sharon Kam
  • BartÓk: Music for Strings, Percussion & Celeste
  • +Mozart: Clarinet Concerto, A major
  • Strauss: Suite from Der Rosenkavalier

Bartók sounds vivid and lean. Mozart is warm and gracious, glowing with quiet depth. Strauss beams with every sound in the orchestral rainbow. Where else could you hear colors like this?
