John Cox, principal horn of the Oregon Symphony, joined the orchestra in 1982. He has appeared as a soloist numerous times in front of the orchestra and has performed most of the major concerto literature including both concertos of Richard Strauss, Mozart concerti and Sinfonia Concertante, and others. He can be heard on all Oregon Symphony broadcasts and recordings, including its latest Grammy nominations conducted by Music Director Carlos Kalmar.
A member of the Mainly Mozart Festival in San Diego, John frequently performs with Chamber Music Northwest, has performed at Lincoln Center, and has been featured as soloist, clinician, and lecturer multiple times at the International Horn Society’s annual symposiums, including Brisbane, Australia and London, England. He also travels around the country to join colleagues in chamber music performances, most recently in September 2015 with Philip Palermo, Associate Concertmaster of the Indianapolis Symphony in performance of the Brahms Horn Trio.
On the Centaur label, John can be heard on a solo horn CD featuring the music of Chopin, Schumann, and Walter Gieseking’s Quintet for Winds and Piano, as well as a horn ensemble recording featuring the Oregon Symphony horn section and friends performing the music of Bach and Mendelssohn. He appears as hornist with the Westwood Woodwind Quintet on the Crystal Records label.
Currently, John is an adjunct faculty horn instructor at the University of Portland, and has been a faculty member of the Barry Tuckwell Institute.
