Music in the Garden

Presented in partnership by Portland Japanese Garden and Oregon Symphony in celebration of Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Portland Japanese Garden

Oregon Symphony musicians will share music celebrating Asian and Asian American composers, musicians, and culture in six short recitals at Portland Japanese Garden. All six performances are free to enjoy with purchase of admission to the Garden. Join us for an afternoon of music in the Garden!

All performances take place in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center at Portland Japanese Garden

1:15 pm

Keiko Araki, Shin-young Kwon, Maia Hoffman, and Seth Biagini
Chinese and Japanese folk songs arranged for string quartet

2:15 pm

Keiko Araki, Shin-young Kwon, Maia Hoffman, and Seth Biagini
Works by contemporary Chinese female composers and a medley of Japanese folk songs

3:15 pm

Casey Jones, Robert Taylor, Charley Reneau, and JáTtik Clark
Music for low brass quartet featuring composers Tomohiro Tatebe, Hiromori Hayashi, and Nintendo sound designer Koji Kondo

4:15 pm

Fumino Ando
Solo violin arrangements of Japanese songs by Hibari Misora, Michio Miyagi, folk songs, and more

5 pm

Martha Long and Zach Galatis
Music for two flutes from traditional folk songs, music from Asia, and more

6 pm

In honor of Jun Märkl, Principal Guest Conductor of the Oregon Symphony
Music for violin and Japanese koto, featuring acclaimed musician Masumi Timson and Oregon Symphony Artist-In-Residence Simone Lamsma. Brief opening remarks by Jun Märkl, Steve Bloom, and Scott Showalter.

 

Plan Your Visit

Garden admission (or member reservations for Portland Japanese Garden members) is required for entrance to Portland Japanese Garden. There is no additional cost or ticket needed to enjoy the music. Last entry to the Garden is at 6 pm.

The Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center is indoors, and the performances will take place rain or shine.

Afternoon recitals will be 20-30 minutes long. The final recital at 6 pm will be 45 minutes long.

There is both seating and standing room to view the performances.
