Open Music with Kenji Bunch

Hosted by Gabriel Kahane
at The Old Church

Open Music launches with a concert that orbits the mind of composer, violist, and local hero, Kenji Bunch, whose new fanfare, TIME IN, opens our 125th Anniversary season. In this intimate marriage of music and conversation, we’ll hear music that inspires Kenji—from generations past, present, and future—in addition to some of his own work, all performed by musicians of the Oregon Symphony, with cameos by Gabriel Kahane and Bunch. Reflecting Bunch’s tendency toward musical omnivorousness, the evening will run the stylistic gamut from Brahms and Bartók to Morton Feldman and everything in between, with music by the West African composer Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté, up-and-comer inti figgis-vizueta, and a Johnny Cash tune thrown in for good measure.

“What I love most about Kenji’s music is its honesty, and its sense of humor. There’s no pretense in it, which is what gives it its emotional power.” - Gabriel Kahane

Open Music with Nathalie Joachim and Pekka Kuusisto

Composer, musician and Oregon Symphony Creative Alliance member Nathalie Joachim joins renowned violinist Pekka Kuusisto on stage at the Alberta Rose Theater. Joachim’s deeply moving album Fanm d’Ayiti (Women of Haiti) recently earned a Grammy nomination, and Kuusisto’s fresh approach to repertoire brings joy and beauty to everything he touches: whether it’s his idiosyncratic take on the Beethoven Violin Concerto or an improvisation on a Finnish folk-tune.
