Oregon Symphony Appoints Su-Han Yang as Associate Conductor
PORTLAND, Ore., August 20th, 2025 – The Oregon Symphony is pleased to announce the appointment of conductor Su-Han Yang as Associate Conductor, beginning with the 2025-26 season this September.
Yang succeeds Deanna Tham, who has served with distinction as the Symphony’s Harold & Arlene Schnitzer Associate Conductor for a successful and incredible full 3-year term. The Oregon Symphony thanks Deanna for her extraordinary leadership and artistry over the past three years and congratulates her on her new role as Music Director of the Portland Chamber Orchestra.
Yang brings international recognition and a breadth of experience to the Oregon Symphony. He was awarded First Prize in the 10th International Grzegorz Fitelberg Competition for Conductors, one of the most prestigious competitions in the field. He currently serves as Associate Conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and previously held the same role at the Taiwan Philharmonic.
A frequent guest conductor with orchestras across Europe and Asia, Yang has led performances with the Silesian Philharmonic, Polish Baltic Philharmonic, Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Brandenburger Symphoniker, and Camerata Taiwan, among many others. He is also active in opera and festival settings, conducting productions such as Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel at the National Taichung Theater and contemporary works at the Weiwuying International Music Festival.
Born in Tainan, Taiwan, Yang has established himself as one of the most promising conductors of his generation.
Yang studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, National Taiwan Normal University, and Tunghai University, with distinguished teachers including Prof. Christian Ehwald, Prof. Hans-Dieter Baum, Prof. Apo Hsu, and Prof. Annie Chung. His career has been further shaped by mentorship opportunities with renowned conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Jun Märkl, and Peter Eötvös.
“Su-Han brings a remarkable blend of precision, energy, and a joyful stage presence,” said Jean Vollum Music Director David Danzmayr. “I am thrilled to welcome him to the Oregon Symphony and look forward to the exciting music we will create for our audiences.”
