Surrealism and Songs of a Revolution
January 7, 9 & 10, 2027
Shostakovich & Rachmaninoff
Overview
Strife and battle erupt in Shostakovich’s musical portrayal of the precursor to the Russian Revolution in his Symphony No. 11 “The Year 1905”. Superstar pianist Marc-André Hamelin joins the Symphony in Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, an exhilarating joyride of keyboard pyrotechnics, melodic passion, and humor. Plus, hear South Korean composer Donghoon Shin’s Kafka’s Dream, inspired by a colorfully surreal story by Jorge Luis Borges.
