The Debut
The Oregon Symphony is first established as the Portland Symphony Society, an informal group that includes notable Portlanders such as Edward Failing and Sigmund Frank. On October 30, 1896, The Portland Symphony plays its first concert, making it the ninth-oldest orchestra in the country and the oldest orchestra on the west coast. A local musician named W.H. Kinross conducts the 33-member orchestra at the 1,750-seat Marquam Grand Opera House.
